Tottenham Hotspur fans have hailed Gedson Fernandes’ performance against Southampton in the FA Cup.The Portuguese midfielder, signed on loan from Benfica in the January transfer window, made his fourth appearance for the club in the fourth-round replay.

Fernandes came off the bench in the 54th minute, replacing defender Jan Vertonghen.

The two sides were level at 1-1 when he came on but Danny Ings made it 2-1 in the 72nd minute.

Money talks: How much did Levy pay for each of these Spurs stars?

A late turnaround, however, saw Lucas Moura equalise before Son Heung-Min scored an 87th-minute penalty to book Spurs’ passage into the fifth round, where they will play Norwich City.

And fans were impressed with Fernandes’ display.

Indeed, a number of others believe that the 21-year-old needs to start featuring in Jose Mourinho’s XI more regularly.

He has started just one game during his time at the club, playing 56 minutes in the first clash with Southampton at St Mary’s.

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw on the south coast prior to Wednesday’s encounter.

The youngster, who stands at 6ft tall, made his first-team breakthrough at Benfica, making 59 appearances, and winning two caps for Portugal.
