According to Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola, Wolves have turned their attention to Shenzhen forward Dyego Sousa as they desperately seek a viable backup to Raul Jimenez.

What’s the word?

It’s claimed that the Portuguese striker is a new name on the list of potential options as manager Nuno Santo looks for another attacking addition before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

The west Midlanders announced Olympiacos winger Daniel Podence on a four-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday morning following a £16.9m switch from the Greek Superleague side whilst their pursuit of AEK Athens frontman Nelson Oliveira has hit an obstacle according to the Daily Mail.

Sousa, who is also a client of super-agent Jorge Mendes, could be now in their sights instead.

Smacks of desperation

Wolves’ hunt for a striker is well past the point of desperation now, and they only have themselves to blame having left it this late in the transfer window.

Sousa is a 30-year-old who is currently plying his trade in China, where he has scored just three times in ten appearances.

SC Braga, a team Wolves faced in the Europa League group stages this term, sold the 6 foot 3 forward in the summer for €5.6m (£4.72m) even despite finding the net for them 15 times in 33 matches in Liga NOS, which certainly implies they didn’t rate him all that highly.

This is all far from inspiring, but at the end of the day, Nuno needs squad depth if he is to improve on last season’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

The Molineux-based side are on the cusp of breaking into the top-six and have an easy-looking knockout tie against relegation-threatened Espanyol in Europe – any injury to the 20-goal Jimenez will seriously scupper any chance of success.

Then again, desperation and deadline day very rarely mix well together.
